The Take-Home Price, Explained

October 16, 2026 · 3 min read · CFMOTO of El Cajon

If you have shopped for an ATV, side-by-side or motorcycle, you have seen it: a great price in big letters, and “plus tax, license, fees and freight” in small ones. Then you get to the desk and the number is thousands higher. At CFMOTO of El Cajon we don’t do that. Every unit we list shows the take-home price. Here is what that means.

What the take-home price includes

The take-home price is the number you actually pay to ride away. It includes:

  • The unit price. The machine itself.
  • Freight. The cost of getting it from CFMOTO to our shop.
  • Setup. Uncrating, assembly, fluids and the pre-delivery inspection so it is ready to ride.
  • Documentation fee. The paperwork for the sale.
  • Tire fee. The state tire fee on new tires.
  • DMV registration. Plates or green sticker, depending on the machine.
  • Sales tax at your rate.
  • Minus any factory rebate. If CFMOTO is running a rebate, it is already taken off.

California requires dealers to disclose this number. We put it on the sticker, on the website and in every ad, so there are no surprises at the desk.

Why “plus fees” pricing misleads

A “plus fees” price makes two machines look comparable when they aren’t. One dealer might advertise low and add a large freight and setup charge. Another might add accessories you didn’t ask for. You can’t know until you are sitting down, and by then you have spent your Saturday driving there.

When you compare dealers, compare the out-the-door number. Ask for it in writing. If a dealer won’t give you one before you come in, that tells you something. Ours is right on every unit in our inventory and on every clearance deal.

One thing to know: sales tax depends on where you live, so the tax portion can be different for a buyer in Yuma than for one in San Diego. Tell us where you will register the machine and we’ll give you the exact number.

Financing basics

Most riders finance at least part of their purchase. Here is how it works with us:

  • We work with multiple banks and credit unions and shop the rate for you.
  • All credit is welcome, and first-time buyers are OK. Military and first responders too.
  • You can apply online in about five minutes, with no obligation.
  • Terms, rates and down payment vary by lender and credit profile. We’ll show you real options, not a teaser.
  • Factory rebates and our clearance pricing apply to financed deals too. The take-home price is the take-home price.

Trade-ins

We take trade-ins, any brand, running or not. The value goes toward your down payment. Tell us about your machine on our contact page and we’ll give you a number before you come in, so you know where you stand.

Why Mexican-market units can’t be registered in California

We get this question a lot in San Diego, and it is worth a straight answer. Sometimes a CFMOTO looks cheaper across the border. Here is the catch:

  • No CARB or EPA certification. Mexican-market units aren’t certified for US emissions rules.
  • No California registration. Without that certification, they can’t be registered or titled here. No plates, no green sticker, no legal riding on public land.
  • No US warranty. If something goes wrong, the CFMOTO factory warranty doesn’t cover it here.
  • Import problems. Bringing one across the border creates problems of its own.

Every unit we sell is a US-spec machine with the full CFMOTO factory warranty, and our take-home price already includes your California DMV registration. More on this in our FAQ.

Buying from out of the area

We sell to riders in the Imperial Valley, Yuma and Riverside County regularly. We can handle out-of-state paperwork and arrange delivery. Spanish speakers can ask for Josear Carrasco at (619) 663-9341.
