Every new owner wants to add something. The trick is spending money where it makes the most difference for how you actually ride. Here is what we recommend first, by machine type, for riders in San Diego County, the Imperial Valley and Yuma.
Before you buy anything, check what your trim already includes. Many CFMOTO models come well equipped from the factory. Most ZFORCE trims have a roof and winch, and every CFORCE ATV has a winch, power steering and alloy wheels standard. No point buying what you already have.
Side-by-sides: ZFORCE and UFORCE
Roof
If your machine didn’t come with one, a roof is usually the first thing to add here. Southern California sun is relentless, and shade makes a long desert day far more comfortable. A roof also gives you a mounting point for lights and a whip flag.
Windshield
Full, half or vented, depending on how you ride. A full windshield keeps wind and cold off you on a backcountry morning; a half or vented one is a good choice for dusty group rides, where a full one can pull dust into the cab.
Doors and wind protection
Doors, rear panels and enclosures keep mud, brush and wind out. If you ride in cooler mountain areas or work on a UFORCE through the winter, a fuller cab is worth looking at.
Winch, where it isn’t standard
If your machine didn’t come with one, a winch is cheap insurance. It gets you out of sand and mud, and helps a buddy who is stuck.
Storage
Bed boxes, cargo bags and under-seat storage keep your tools, plug kit, tow strap and water organized. See our desert riding checklist for what to carry.
Lighting and mirrors
Light bars and rock lights make getting back after dark safer, and mirrors help you keep track of the group behind you.
ATVs: CFORCE
With a winch already standard on every CFORCE, start with:
- Storage. Front and rear rack boxes or bags carry water, tools and lunch.
- Hand guards and a windshield for brush and cold mornings.
- Extra lighting if you ride early or late.
- Mirrors for group rides.
- Work attachments such as plows or implements if your CFORCE earns its keep around the property.
Motorcycles: SS, NK, CL and Ibex
Crash protection
Frame sliders, engine guards, skid plates and hand guards. A tip-over in the driveway or a slow-speed drop on the trail happens to everyone, and protection is much cheaper than replacing levers, covers or bodywork. On an Ibex headed off-road, a skid plate and crash bars are must-haves.
Luggage
Side cases, a top case or soft bags turn a bike into something you can commute on, tour on or camp off. Adventure riders heading into the backcountry will want to plan luggage early.
Comfort
A comfort seat, a taller or adjustable windscreen and heated grips can make a long day in the saddle much easier. Small changes, big difference.
Helmets and gear first
For every machine, the most important accessory goes on you. A properly fitted helmet, eye protection, gloves and boots for every rider and passenger. Add a riding jacket and pants for motorcycles, and a hydration pack for the desert. Spend on gear before chrome.
